THOMAS E. “TOM” CASHMAN, age 46, of Bedford. Beloved husband of Carla M. (nee Powell) for 24 years; loving father of Thomas; cherished son of Thomas and Catherine (nee Borsch) Cashman; dear son-in-law of William and the late Louella Powell; treasured brother of Tammy (LeeRoy) Chesser, Amy Sunday (Jason Kerr), Andrew Cashman (Katie Bowser) and Katrina (Cory) Woodthorpe; brother-in-law to Julia Powell (Colin Johnson), Susan Powell (Joseph Krygier), Amy (Dennis) Crawford; uncle to Tiffany, Tayler, Cody, Nicholas, Benjamin, Samantha, Lincoln, Liam, Reid; great uncle to Lilly, Hunter and Scarlett. Valued friend to many.
Tom was a graduate of Bedford High School (1993) and received degrees from Kent State University (B.S. Physics), and Cleveland State University (B.S. Computer Science). He was actively involved in Boy Scouts of America as Committee Chairman for Troop 399 in Bedford, where his son Thomas earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He loved working with the youth involved, teaching them outdoor skills with great enthusiasm and patience (despite often lovingly referring to the boys as “knuckleheads”). Most recently, he enjoyed an intensive, high adventure, seven-day wilderness canoe trip with the troop and his son to the Canadian boundary waters of northern Minnesota at the BSA Camp, Northern Tier.
Tom loved being in nature, and his dream was to someday “live off the land”, enjoying everything the great outdoors had to offer. An avid camper and fisherman, his favorite place to be was sitting by a campfire with a bourbon and diet coke in his hand and his wife and son at his side. His quick wit and clever sense of humor were evident to all who met him, and he had knack for bringing laughter into any room he entered.
Known for his diverse and eclectic taste in music, Tom was also an enthusiastic movie buff, amateur archer, and an innovative handyman. He was an out-of-the-box thinker, who excelled at seeing tasks from unique angles and finding innovate solutions to projects large and small. His wife Carla often referred to him as the ‘Dog Whisper’, as Tom had a true love for dogs of any size, particularly his beloved Buddy. Above all, Tom loved his family. He enjoyed spending time with them at various family functions and found great joy in planning fun activities for his son, nephews and their friends. He was loved by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Friends received at the ST. JOHN FUNERAL HOME, 923 BROADWAY AVE., BEDFORD, (ONE MILE WEST OF THE FORBES-BROADWAY EXIT OF I-271), WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13 FROM 2 – 4 AND 6 – 8 P.M. Services, Thursday, October 14 at the Lutheran Church of the Master, 860 Northfield Rd., Bedford, at 10:00 A.M. (PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH). Burial Hillcrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Boy Scouts of America Troop 399. The troop is creating a fund in Tom’s memory that will go to the Beaumont Scout Reservation for continued upkeep and renovations.
