Mother Mary Thomas of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, PCPA was born Joan Schiefen to parents, Edward and Viola Schiefen, on May 8, 1933, in Appleton, Wisconsin. She was an extraordinary artist who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, Instituto Allende in Mexico, and Dante Alighieri School in Rome.
While in Rome, Mother received her veritable calling to serve God. She entered the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration Monastery in 1959 in Cleveland, OH, willing to leave all else, including her artwork. She faithfully served and loved her sisters and her life in the Monastery! After a time, she was asked to use her artistic gift to reflect the Love and Mercy of God, which she has done for over 50 years. Someone described Mother at work as the kneeling nun whose prayers flowed through her paintbrush.
Mother Thomas PCPA entered Eternal Life on March 6, 2024. Mass of Christian burial is on Saturday, March 9 at The Conversion of St. Paul’s Shrine at 4108 Euclid Ave., Cleveland. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration, 4108 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44103 in her name.
