Irene K. Vegh, age 71, of Cleveland, OH, passed away December 27, 2021. Loving mother of David; beloved sister of Clara (Gary) Freudensprung and Ladd; dear aunt of Michael (Colleen Palmer) and Lisa (Dennis) Gross; great aunt of Michael Jr., Jonathan, Devan and Owen, and generous and loving friend to many.
In 1956, Irene came to the U.S. as an immigrant at the age of six with her parents, sister and brother after fleeing their home country of Hungary due to the Russian invasion. Irene was a leader and pioneer in the aluminum industry, being one of the first females to advance to a management position. A true trailblazer and firebrand, Irene championed the promotion of women in her industry, serving as a mentor to numerous others on their road to success. She thrived as a Buyer with Apex Metals, Wabash Alloys, and Metal Conversions Ltd., where she worked most recently until her retirement in 2016.
In her free time over the years, Irene enjoyed traveling, eating oysters, playing golf and softball, reading and watching science fiction/fantasy, and attending her son’s theatrical productions. She was known for her quick wit and raucous sense of humor. She will be dearly missed and remembered for her great generosity, bestowing wonderful gifts upon family and friends (and often strangers as well!).
