Agnes L. "Marky" Pekar (nee Markovich)

Funeral Date February 8, 2020

Cremation.  Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Light of Hearts Villa on Sat., Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. Burial All Saints Cemetery. Agnes “Marky” Louise Pekar, age 101, passed away on January 31, 2020.

Agnes was born on July 2, 1918 in Salem Ohio to Emma (nee Skrak) and Andrew Markovich (both deceased).  She joins her brothers and sisters, Clare Helen Corso “Toot” (Augie), Frances May Glogan “May” (George) and Tom Markovich in heaven.

She married Joseph Cyril Pekar (deceased) and spent close to 75 years of marriage together.  They met while she was attending nursing school at St. Vincent Charity Nursing School.  One of their first dates was at the New York Spaghetti House.   They had a beloved daughter, Catherine Ann Surman (deceased) and together they lived in Europe as well as Walton Hills.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Christine Cowen, James Joseph Cowen (Leslie) and Robert Andrew Cowen (Denise) and her great grandchildren, Jamie Christine Cowen and Matthew Robert Cowen.   She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Susan Corso, Frances May “Sis”, Augie Corso III, Richard Corso and Mary Corso and many grand and great grand nieces and nephews.

Agnes loved her family above all and spent much of her time taking care of her husband, daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren while also working full time as the head nurse of surgery at Brentwood Hospital.  She loved animals and nature and could spend hours looking out the window at turkeys, deer, songbirds, skunks, raccoons, opossums, stray cats and any other critters that were lucky enough to end up in her back yard where she fed them all.    She had a special place in her heart for pets especially Petite, Butch, Blackie and all the inside and outside kitties.  Agnes also loved flowers, especially orchids and always had several on her windowsill.   Every summer she could not wait until Johnson’s farm had fresh sweetcorn and drove up for a dozen frequently.  She would eat corn on the cob even at 101!

Agnes and Joe were longtime members of St. Mary Parish in Bedford, Ohio.  The family would like to thank all the loving caregivers at Light of Hearts Villa and Hospice of the Western Reserve and ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Light of Hearts Villa, 283 Union St., Bedford, OH 44146 and direct it to the Sr. Helen Scasny, SC Benevolent fund to support residents that outlive their funding or Hospice of the Western Reserve at donate.hospicewr.org.

Agnes was cremated.  Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday, February 8 at Light of Hearts Villa, 283 Union St., Bedford at 10 A.M.  Burial All Saints Cemetery.
